On every climate front, the only solution is solidarity and decisive action.
The world needs clarity from developed countries on where they are on the delivery on their $100 billion dollars a year promise to support #ClimateAction in developing countries.
I urge leaders at the highest level to take full part in #COP27 and tell the world what #ClimateAction they will take nationally & globally.
They can demonstrate through their presence and active participation that climate truly is the top global priority that it must be.
#COP27 must be the place for action on loss and damage.
This is the number one test of how seriously governments take the growing climate toll on the most vulnerable countries.
It is a moral imperative that cannot be ignored.
While climate chaos intensifies, #ClimateAction has stalled.
#COP27 is critical – but we have a long way to go.
Every government, every business, every investor, every institution must step up with concrete plans to keep the 1.5 degrees goal alive.
The world can’t wait.
Today, over one billion people live in overcrowded settlements with inadequate housing, and that number is rising every day.
I urge governments to invest more to make cities work for everyone, and close the gaps. We must leave no one behind.
Ahead of #COP27, leaders must:
Demonstrate more ambition on mitigation.
Deliver -in full- financial commitments to the developing world.
Support adaptation & resilience efforts.
Embrace meaningful action on loss & damage.
We have no time to lose.
Pacific Island countries are on the frontlines of climate chaos despite doing nothing to create this crisis.
I commend their powerful, consistent, and united voice urging #ClimateAction at a scale commensurate with the scope of the challenge.
On the International Day of Non-Violence, we celebrate Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday & values of peace, respect & the essential dignity shared by everyone.
We can defeat today's challenges by embracing these values & working across cultures & borders to build a better future.
Half of all climate finance must go to adaptation & resilience, to protect people & economies.
Unless funds are disbursed now, climate tragedies will multiply, with devastating consequences for years to come.
I strongly urge the Government of Yemen & the Houthis to renew & expand the nationwide truce negotiated by the @UN.
This is a time for leaders to prioritize the needs & aspirations of the Yemeni people.
This is the time to choose peace for good.
Older people inspire us with their resilience, knowledge & experience.
By 2030, 1.4 billion people will be at least 60 years old.
Our task as the global community is to build more inclusive and age-friendly societies. #OlderPersonsDay
Dozens of adolescent girls & boys were killed today in a heinous attack on an educational center in Kabul City.
The de facto authorities must protect the rights of all Afghans - regardless of ethnicity or gender - to access education safely and securely.
The so-called “referenda” in Ukraine were conducted in areas under Russian occupation.
They can’t be called a genuine expression of the popular will.
Any decision by Russia to go forward will further jeopardize the prospects for peace.
In this moment of peril, I must underscore my duty as Secretary-General to uphold the @UN Charter.
The Charter is clear.
Any annexation of a State’s territory by another State resulting from the threat or use of force is a violation of the Principles of the Charter & int’l law.
As we head to #COP27, I appeal to all leaders to realize the goals of the #ParisAgreement.
Lift your climate ambition.
Listen to your people’s calls for change.
Invest in solutions that lead to sustainable economic growth.
A disastrous year for Alpine glaciers.
Lack of winter snow and brutal summer heat ➡️Swiss glaciers lost more than 6 % of their ice volume
(years with a loss of 2% classed as “extreme”).
Glacier melt is one of WMO's #StateofClimate indicators.
A prompt, impartial and effective investigation into Ms. Mahsa Amini’s death should be conducted by an independent competent authority.
Human rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association should be respected.
